Cyndi Lauper - “Time After Time” (1984)

One may argue that this is the most emotional ballad ever. Sure Cyndi’s heartfelt vocals (maybe her best) could touch a heart of stone. As sometimes miraculously happens in the history of music, this was the very last song to be written and recorded for her debut album “She’s So Unusual”, when the recording sessions were already finished.

As for the video, I always thought it depicted Cyndi leaving all behind, hometown, family and lover (Lauper’s mother, brother and then-boyfriend David Wolff appear in the video) to go and pursue her singing aspirations in the big city. I don’t know if that’s her real lifestory, but I’m somehow sure that the inspiration for the song came from something true and very private.
